Police constable arrested in bribery case

Mumbai: Officials from Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a police constable for accepting a bribe from a person to grant bail to his kin incarcerated in judicial custody.

According to ACB officials, Chandrakant Shelar, 40, police constable attached to the Bhiwandi town police station was trapped on Monday after a local resident Ramesh Patil, lodged a complaint against him. Patil's brothers Sunil and Santosh, along with four other persons, have been arrested by the police under the Atrocities Act.Since Sunil and Santosh are under the magistrate custody remand (MCR) in Adharwadi jail in Kalyan, Ramesh wanted to get them out on bail. Shelar assured that he could 'facilitate' bail but demanded a bribe of Rs50,000. Ramesh approached the ACB office in Thane and lodged a complaint against Shelar. On the same day, ACB officials trapped Shelar accepting the bribe, in the campus of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi. Inspector KJ Kadam is investigating.
