Mumbai's civic body rushes to fill potholes after it stops raining

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) rushed to fill the potholes in Mumbai yesterday after the rains, which have been pounding the city for the past few days, stopped.

BMC workers rushed to fill the gaping potholes in the city with loose gravel- a temporary solution which could be washed away by heavy rains. But the solution might offer some relief to residents who face the problem every year.

"The Municipal Corporation blames the MMRDA and so on. The blame game continues, nobody is ready to take the blame for the poor conditions of roads, and we, as common people, suffer," says one resident.

Every year, thousands of potholes appear on Mumbai roads, and the situation is worsened during monsoon. This year, three people have died in the city in pothole-related incidents.

An emergency meeting called by the highest decision-making body of BMC on Wednesday concluded with members engaging in blame-games and political bickering, with no constructive measures emerging. (Read)

BMC, the richest municipal body in the country which has been under the Shiv Sena for several years, has spent Rs 58 crores this year alone on just filling the potholes. However, there is little to show for the money spent.

"Corruption is a part of each and every field. Name one area in Maharashtra where corruption is not involved but all this is a different topic," says Gopal Gade, a Shiv Sena Shakha Pramukh in lower Parel, another area in Mumbai whose roads are covered with hundreds of potholes.
