Mumbai: Cop Thrashed With His Own Lathi During Ganpati Visarjan

Pahal Rawal attacked the policeman.

Mumbai: A 45-year-old cop who was on duty at Charkop village during Ganpati visarjan was thrashed with his own lathi just for telling a drunken reveller to stay off the road and get on the pavement instead.

Assistant Sub Inspector Nanda Naik from Charkop Police was managing the crowd near the Jalaram pond. Due to the Ganpati processions, there was heavy traffic on the road, and Naik told one of the devotees - Pahal Kalu Singh Rawal - to stand on the footpath and not block the traffic.

But Rawal went berserk and snatched the ASI's lathi and began to hit him with it. A few passers-by rushed to inform other police officers about the violence. The accused was overpowered by the cops and arrested.

Naik was taken to Shatabdi Hospital, where he received two stitches on his forehead, after which he was discharged. The arrested accused is a resident of Wadala Sangamnagar, where he works as a cook at a local Chinese eatery. Charkop police sources said he was inebriated at the time of the attack.
