Mumbai: Officials from MRA Marg police station arrested the wife of a GRP constable from their Wadala residence on Monday.

An officer from MRA Marg police said 40-year-old Usha Katkar had targeted a tipsy Ashok Ravji Kamble (58) and fled with his bag containing Rs 16,000 and a cellphone from outside CST station on October 3.

At the time of the incident, Kamble was on his way home to Tilak Nagar after a few drinks at a hotel in Fort that he frequents regularly.

Kamble, a businessman, told the police that he had withdrawn the cash for miscellaneous expenses during his son's marriage.

"Based on the CCTV footage, one of the GRP officials at Wadala spotted her and informed the police. We arrested the woman from her Wadala residence," said an officer from MRA Marg police station.

Hard times
During interrogation, Usha told police that the family had fallen on hard times since her husband's arrest and she had taken to thievery to overcome the financial crisis.

The officer added that Usha is Constable Kisan Katkar's wife. Kisan, who was with the Kurla GRP, was arrested in 2011 after accidentally firing his gun in an inebriated state. He was on duty in a local train during the incident.
