Maharashtra To Launch Website For Labour Grievances

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will soon launch a website where labourers from both organised and unorganised sectors can submit their complaints, Labour Minister Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar said here today.

The website will focus on ensuring that statutory minimum wages are paid to the workers, he said.

"We will be able to protect the rights of the labourers who report their problems through this website. Many a time it is difficult for them to contact the government authorities directly," Mr Nilangekar said.

Focus of the portal would be on ensuring that minimum wages are paid to labourers, and action would be taken whenever a case of underpayment is reported, the minister said.

"There are several cases where workers are sacked without any notice or prior intimation. We will keep a watch on these things through the website," he said.

The minister would receive a weekly report of complaints registered through the website. A committee headed by the Labour Commissioner will deal with the complaints and maintain the website.

Last year Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya had indicated that minimum wages are likely to be revised in future. He said that an upward revision would help the labour force cope with the changes in cost of living.

"The last meeting of MWAB (Minimum Wages Advisory Board) was held on May 26, 2016 where suggestions were received for a review of the minimum wages in the scheduled employment," he said while replying to questions in the Lok Sabha.
