Indrani Mukerjea Collapsed Due to Weakness, No Drug Overdose: Police

Indrani Mukerjea allegedly killed her daughter Sheena Bora in April 2012

Mumbai: Former media executive Indrani Mukerjea, who is accused of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora, had collapsed in Mumbai's Byculla women's jail on October 2 due to weakness and not drug overdose, the police has said.

"Overall my opinion after conducting inquiry is, there was no overdose of any medicine, drug or poison," Bipin Singh, Inspector General of Police (Prisons), said.

Ms Mukerjea had briefly stopped taking medicines and has a history of fainting, the IG (Prisons) added. The Maharashtra government had ordered an inquiry by the IG (Prisons) after Ms Bora collapsed.

42-year-old Ms Mukerjea, arrested in August, had fainted in jail on October 2 and was then admitted to JJ Hospital in an unconscious state. She was treated and sent back to prison earlier this week.

On the reports of traces of opium and cocaine found in Ms Mukherjee's blood, Mr Singh said, "the amount is negligible and has no meaning."

"The amount of cocaine found is 35 nanogram per mililitre and this is way below the limit of 300 nanogram per mililitre," said Vijay Satbir Singh, Principal Secretary Home.

BK Upadhyay, Additional Director General, Prisons, added "If you and I send our samples there could be similar traces of such drugs. It could be because of pesticides etc. we consume with food."

The IG (Prisons) also said that from jail, Ms Mukerjea wrote four letters to her husband Peter Mukerjea and received two letters from him. He also revealed that no family member has met her in jail.

Indrani Mukerjea also received a money order of Rs 2000 from a relative, he said. Inmates are allowed to spend Rs 2000 in the jail canteen every month.

Ms Mukrejea, along with her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyam Rai, allegedly murdered her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012.
