In Mumbai Developer Suicide Case, Corporators Given 5 Days to Surrender

45-year-old Suraj Parmar shot himself dead on Wednesday at a sample flat on his project site in Thane.

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of four corporators in connection with Navi Mumbai real estate developer Suraj Parmar's suicide case.

The court has ordered corporators Vikrant Chavan from Congress, Najib Mulla and Hanumant Jagdale of the NCP, and Sudhakar Chavan, an Independent, to surrender themselves to the police by 9 am on December 5. Till then, the corporators are expected to report to the police station between 11 am and 1 pm daily.

The four corporators were booked by the police for abetment to suicide after the former chairman of Cosmos Group, Suraj Parmar, shot himself dead on October 7 this year at one of his construction sites.

Mr Parmar, 45, left behind a 13-page suicide note in which he alleged harassment by a nexus of politicians and Municipal Corporation officers. A case was then filed against the four accused.

In November, the Maharashtra government had opposed the anticipatory bail applications filed by the corporators.

The Government, in an affidavit, had told the Bombay high court that the police needed to interrogate the corporators in custody as they were not cooperating with the investigations.

Suraj Parmar's death sparked nationwide protests by builders, who demonstrated against red tape and alleged harassment by Government officials.

Apart from demanding action against be taken against officials who accept bribes, builders demanded for single window clearance and that the Government speed up approval process for projects.
