Rakesh Maria was supervising Sheena Bora case until he was unceremoniously removed.
Former Mumbai police chief Rakesh Maria and two more police officers were questioned by the CBI recently in connection with the Sheena Bora murder investigation.
Mr Maria was supervising the high profile case until he was unceremoniously removed and moved to a low key assignment as Director General of Home Guards in September last year.
The CBI also recorded the statements of two other senior police officers involved in the investigation, Deven Bharati and Satya Narayan Choudhary.
It is believed that Mr Maria's direct handling of the day to day investigations into the murder case cost him his position as the top cop of Mumbai.
The 58-year-old officer spent hours personally interrogating suspects, including Sheena Bora's mother Indrani Mukerjea and her husband, former media tycoon Peter Mukerjea.
Sheena Bora was allegedly killed by Indrani, her driver and her ex-husband and buried in the forests near Mumbai in 2012.
In the middle of the investigation, which lent itself to sensational revelations almost daily, Mr Maria was replaced by Ahmed Javed as police commissioner. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that "all cases must get equal attention."
The state government said Mr Maria may continue to lead the investigation but later the case was transferred to the CBI.
Mr Maria, who shot to fame after successful investigation of the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, was appointed Mumbai police commissioner during the previous Congress-NCP regime in the state.
