Drunk Porsche driver hit biker, tried to race away

Mumbai: In Mumbai, a young driver in a speeding Porsche hit a motorcyclist who is now in a critical condition in hospital.

24-year-old Ankesh Shahra was drunk, says the Mumbai Police, when he ran his Porsche into Ainul Haq, who works as a delivery boy for a local restaurant named Zaffran.

Mr Shahra tried to race away from the scene of the accident near the Police Gymkhana on Marine Drive. He was stopped by the police and was arrested for rash and negligent driving.  He was granted bail soon after.

His father, Dinesh, is the Managing Director of Ruchi Soya, a company with a turnover of more than 13,000 crores.

Mr Haq's family is in Jharkhand. The owner of the restaurant he worked at is looking after him. It took a nine-hour surgery to fix Mr Haq's dislocated elbow. He is likely to spend at least the next 12 days in hospital.

"I got a call. This was at about 3.30 am from a guest who was passing by Marine Drive and saw the boy lying in a pool of blood, and he was in uniform. That is how he informed the restaurant. He was hit by this car and the car tried to speed away after hitting him. I was at the police station when he was caught and brought there. There was a strong smell of alcohol coming from him," said Ainul's employer Moneeb Biriya.

An eyewitness named Goldie explains, "I was basically out for a nice bike ride with my friend and I saw a couple of people gathered near Marine Drive... and I saw this guy who was literally bleeding out there. Now even if I'm thinking of that moment,  I am getting goose bumps because that guy's entire hand was almost cut, like his entire arm was about to get dislocated."
