Mumbai: An assistant sub inspector of the Mumbai Police today shot himself dead after opening fire at a senior officer inside the Vakola police station at Santacruz.

The assistant sub inspector, Deelip Shirke, this evening had an argument with the senior police inspector over being marked absent in the station diary, police said.

When the senior inspector was leaving the police station, Mr Shirke fired two rounds from his service revolver.

One bullet hit the senior inspector on the back and the other hit his orderly on the thigh, police said.

Mr Shirke then turned the gun on himself.

"Yesterday night, he was absent at the duty. He was marked absent in the Station diary entry. He came today and there was some argument... The Crime branch will investigate on the case," said Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria after visiting the police station.

All three were rushed to the Lilavati Hospital where Mr Shirke was declared dead on arrival. The senior police inspector and his orderly are admitted at the hospital. While the orderly is said to be out of danger, the senior police inspector's condition is reportedly serious.
