1993 Mumbai blasts case: Sanjay Dutt surrenders in Mumbai's special TADA court

Actor Sanjay Dutt, convicted in the 1993 Bombay blasts case, has surrendered in the special TADA court. He will now be sent to a jail to serve 42 months after being convicted in a 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

Judge told Sanjay Dutt:  I have allowed you everything except e cigarettes. You should give up smoking. Sanjay Dutt nodded and smiled. He was in the witness box.

When Sanjay Dutt entered the court he said was heckled by the media. The judge told him to sit down and relax.

Sanjay Dutt to get home-cooked food in jail
The court rejected Mr Dutt's request to be allowed to smoke electronic cigarettes in prison. He had also asked for permission to meet his family and to be allowed to move around freely in jail. The court has not yet decided on those requests.

Sanjay Dutt has made certain requests to the court. He has asked for permission for home made to be delivered to him.  He wants permission to smoke electronic cigarettes because he's a chain smoker.  Also wants permission to meet family and lawyers often. Thin mattress and pillow for his Arteosclerosis and also medicines.

After 20 minutes, Sanjay Dutt and his sister Priya Dutt and wife Manyata have finally managed to get out of the car and have entered the court premises. The completion of procedures is likely to take more than an hour

There are at least 100 cameramen and reporters present outside the court making it impossible for Mr Dutt to come out. Mahesh Bhatt, a family friend accompanying the Dutts is seen pleading with the media to back off.

Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra also comes to visit Sanjay Dutt. Three players from Mr Kundra's team have been arrested for alleged spot-fixing. Mr Kundra had earlier tweeted that he would visit the actor.

A large posse of policemen has been deployed outside actor Sanjay Dutt's residence at Imperial Heights building in suburban Bandra ahead of his surrender before a designated TADA court here in the 1993 serial blasts case today.

The security has been beefed in the wake of alleged threat to Mr Dutt's life and protest by little known organization "Hindu Rashtra Sena" outside his residence yesterday demanding that the actor should not be granted any VIP treatment.

Due to the media interest in the case, and a high number of cameras present outside the home of the actor, a big green cloth has been installed across the gate. Sources say this is for privacy of the entire Dutt family that lives in the building.

Sanjay Dutt has been convicted and sentenced for illegally possessing a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle that were part of a consignment of weapons and explosives brought to India for coordinated serial blasts that killed 257 people and injured over 700 in 1993. Two men, Kersi Adajania and Yusuf Nullwala, who destroyed the AK-56 rifle, will also surrender with Mr Dutt today.

Jail time for Sanjay Dutt, to serve 42-month sentence
Yesterday, Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail received an anonymous letter stating there is a threat to Sanjay Dutt's life inside the prison premises. The authorities have said they will provide adequate security to Mr Dutt.

Mr Dutt, 53, will undergo medical test at the Arthur Road Jail and after that, he is likely to be shifted to the Yerwada Jail in Pune.
