12-Year-Old Boy Jumps Off School Building After Rebuke, Teacher Arrested

A 12-year-old student allegedly committed suicide at a Navi Mumbai school on Tuesday

Mumbai:

A 12-year-old boy jumped to his death from his school building near Mumbai on Tuesday, allegedly after he was scolded by a teacher.
The teacher, Somaya Manoharan, was arrested today and booked for abetment of suicide.

Gaurav Kank was a Class 6 student of the New Horizon Public School in Navi Mumbai. After being told off by his teacher, he allegedly went to the fourth floor, opened a window of a classroom and jumped.

"His father has complained to us about the negligence of the school authorities and we have started the investigation," said Janardhan Thorat, a senior police officer.

A group of parents gathered to protest at the school, holding it responsible for not ensuring the safety of children.

"The school authority is responsible for the incident. We told them to put the grills in the classrooms," said a parent.

"How can it be the school's negligence? We are also shocked as to why this has happened. We are planning to find out why this has happened and this won't happen in the future," Renuka Balaji, the school principal, told reporters.
