Building collapses in Meerut, at least one killed

Meerut: At least one person was today killed and six others were injured when a two-storey old building under renovation collapsed in the congested Zahidyan area in the city. Many people are feared trapped in the debris, police said.

"An old building, which was under renovation, in Subhash Bazaar in the Zahidyan area collapsed this morning. Six persons have been taken out of the debris. One of them has died while the rest have been admitted to a hospital," said SP City Om Prakash.

Some construction was taking place on the second floor of the building, which had a helmet-manufacturing factory on the ground floor. Due to heavy rains this morning, an under-construction wall collapsed. As a result, the roof of the first floor also collapsed and fell over the factory labourers working on the ground floor, said Parkish.

"The deceased has been identified as Ibrahim," the SP said, adding that more construction labourers and factory workers could be feared trapped under the debris.
