The National Green Tribunal on Wednesday sought the response of the Uttar Pradesh government and others on a petition by a Meerut resident seeking steps to deal with heaps of garbage being disposed in the open and lack of proper drainage in the city.
Two people were killed and two others injured after a fight allegedly broke out between a group of customers and employees of a fast-food joint over a difference of Rs 40 in a bill in Meerut's TP Nagar, police said today.
Meerut in Uttar Pradesh has become a giant garbage tip, with the city's striking municipal sanitation workers dumping fetid trash on all major roads over the last four days. They want a pay hike announced last year to be implemented.
Meerut police on Friday used batons to disperse protesting students caught in a turf war between the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, who have been at loggerheads for the last several months. Seven students were arrested and a few sustained minor injuries.
