In a horrific incident in Ludhiana, acid was thrown on the face of a young woman just hours before her wedding today.
The 22-year-old had gone to a salon in the Saraba Nagar locality for her bridal makeup. Shortly, a 25-year-old man entered the salon on the pretext of delivering some papers and fled after throwing acid on the young woman. The attack has been captured on CCTV.
The victim, a resident of Barnala town, sustained 45 per cent burns and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (burn) of a local hospital, where her condition was stated to be stable.
Stating that the girl's face, eyes, chest and abdomen were affected, Medical Superintendent of the hospital Ashwani Chaudhary said it was premature to say whether "she will retain her vision or not".
NS Dhillon, Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, said that based on the preliminary details provided by the victim's family, the attacker used to make threat calls to the young woman asking her to marry him or face consequences.
The attacker is a brother of a friend of the victim, the police said, adding that teams had been sent to his home town Barnala to nab him.
The victim's family said due to the incident, the marriage has been postponed.
