Lucknow: 40 per cent youth may celebrate New Year at home, says survey

Lucknow: Around 40 per cent of youth in the city of Nawabs are likely to welcome the New Year staying at home due to various reasons, says an Assocham survey.

"While majority of youth in the state capital are planning to go out and party with friends and relatives, most of these have planned to celebrate the New Year's eve locally without splurging too much money," the survey said.

With a view to gauge the mood of people and their plans to kick off 2014 the Assocham's Social Development Foundation interacted with about 200 college students, young corporate executives and people engaged in various professions in the age group of 18-30 years.

About 40 per cent respondents are planning to stay at home on December 31 night and majority (about 50 per cent) of them said they had been traditionally welcoming the New Year in the past partying with friends away from home, it said.

"There seems to be a lack of inspiration and motivation as sizeable numbers of people are forgoing the traditional New Year celebrations of going out and partying," Assocham National Secretary D S Rawat said.

He said financial woes owing to rising inflation was the prime reason for people refraining from celebrations, followed by job security related concerns, rampant traffic jams, need for sound sleep, cold weather.

Many of those surveyed comprised women who cited safety-related issues for not attending New Year parties.

The majority of youth staying at home this December 31 said they have planned to host a low key gathering with a few close friends, family and relatives at home.
