Damaged ship in no danger of sinking, no oil spill

Kolkata: Container ship 'Tiger Spring', that was damaged in a collision with another vessel 'Green Valley' in Hooghly river last month, has drifted due to tides, but was stable and posed no threat of oil spill or sinking, a top port official said.

"The ship is not sinking and there is no truth in the reports that it has been spilling oil into the river," Kolkata Port trust chairman M L Meena told PTI.

He said the ship would be removed from the channel in two to three days with a crane being brought from Singapore.

"The situation will be normal in two to three days when the crane will arrive to remove the damaged ship from the channel," the KoPT chairman said.

To a question, he said that there was no oil-spill from the damaged vessel. "What has happened is that grease from its side walls has mixed in the water."

KoPT sources said traffic was not affected because of the damaged ship. "Ship movement is on in four of the five channels."

The two ships collided in the Hooghly river on November 23.
