Kolkata: Congress activists today blocked the busy Esplanade crossing in Kolkata after they were denied permission to march to the state secretariat to submit a memorandum on the law and order situation in the state.

The activists started their 'March to Nabanna' (secretariat)" programme from Rani Rashmoni Road in the Esplanade area, but shortly after they were prevented by the police to proceed further.

They then tried to break the police barricade, but having failed to do it the activists blocked the important crossing for more than an hour, throwing traffic haywire.

Later, Bengal Congress president Adhir Chowdhury lashed out at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the worsening law and order situation in the state.

Mr Chowdhury said the Congress would expose the true face of the TMC government through mass contact and agitations.

"It is a pity that the government is afraid even to accept a deputation from us. The TMC can't wipe us out through intimidation and violence. Why did they deploy such a huge police contingent to stop us? We were not going there to take away her chair," the Lok Sabha MP said.
