Class 8 Boy Allegedly Beaten To Death By Teacher At Bengal School

Shamim Mallik had joined the Al Islamia Mission Boarding School at Burwan in Murshidabad district on January 22.

Murshidabad: A class 8 student of a private boarding school in West Bengal has died allegedly after he was beaten to death by his teacher late night on Monday. The 14-year-old's family says he was "punished" for meeting his father at the hostel gate without seeking permission.

Shamim Mallik, 14, had joined the Al Islamia Mission Boarding School at Burwan in Murshidabad district, about 200 km from Kolkata, on January 22. He had returned to school on Monday after spending the weekend at home.

In the evening, his father came to the school to hand over some stationery that he needed.

The boy's family has said in its complaint that a teacher, Hanif Sheikh, thrashed Shamim in the presence of the school's owner, Liton Sheikh, who allegedly did nothing to save the boy.

The boy's father says Shamim's hostel friends have told him that he fainted after the teacher thrashed him. "When they couldn't revive him, they took him to a hospital where he died," father Jalus Mallik said.

Mr Mallik added that school authorities did not inform him about anything. "Parents of my son's friend called me around 11 pm to tell us that my son has been admitted to hospital," he said.

The teacher and the owner of the school were arrested after angry residents of the area blocked the state highway in protest today. They have been charged with murder and sent to two-day police custody.

All the 150 odd students in the hostel were asked to leave by the administration which shut the school down for an indefinite period.
