Bank Manager Kills Woman and 5-Year-Old, Bodies in Suitcases

One trolley bag was later fished out of the river by a diver pressed into service by the police

Sheoraphuli: In West Bengal, a 45-year-old man, who was caught throwing two bags allegedly containing body parts of a woman and her six-year-old daughter into the Ganga, has today been remanded to police custody for 12 days.

Samaresh Sarkar, a bank manager, has claimed that the woman, an acquaintance in Durgapur where they lived, had killed her five-year-old daughter and then committed suicide.

Fearing he might be dragged into this case, he tried to get rid of the bodies.  Mr Sarkar has been arrested for murder and trying to destroy evidence.

According to police, Samaresh Sarkar, whose wife lives in Titagarh, had an illicit relationship with a 34-year-old housewife Sucheta Chakraborty.  He killed the woman and her daughter when she pressurised him for marriage, police said.

Last night, police had taken the accused from Hooghly district, where he was arrested, to the home of the victim in Durgapur in Burdwan district. But police could not enter the house as a huge crowd gathered there demanded the custody of Samaresh Sirkar to punish him.

The police is trying to find out at least one missing suitcase with body parts that the accused allegedly dumped into the river, before he was detained by the fellow passengers in the ferry.
