Kochi:
Hundreds of Youth Congress activists on Saturday barged into the premises, which houses the shutter through which water is diverted from Mullaperiyar into Tamil Nadu. The activists also hoisted flags on top of the shutters.
The police tried to block them from entering the premises, but failed. After hoisting the flag, the activists also staged a dharna.
The police then removed them from the scene. Later, they took out a protest march to Kumily. No one has been arrested in connection with the agitation, the police said. They said that around 500 Youth Congress activists had trespassed the Thekkady check post and barged into the premises where the shutter was situated. Meanwhile, the strike staged by the Mullaperiyar Samara Samithi at Chappath entered the seventh day on Saturday.
Hundreds of people, including women and children, from different parts of the district flocked to Chappath expressing solidarity to the agitation.
