New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was used as the BJP's star campaigner in Kerala, was being trolled on Twitter today for comparing the coastal state to Somalia in a recent election speech.

Among the top Twitter trends this morning was #PoMoneModi, which rips off "Po Mone Dinesha", a famous line from a Malayalam film and translates as "Son, you're dismissed, better head home".

Kerala votes on Monday for its next government.

On Sunday, the PM said that for basic and essential health and development factors, Kerala is worse than Somalia, leading to public umbrage and a strong letter of complaint from Chief Minister Oommen Chandy that was made public yesterday.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has asked PM Modi "to show some political decency by withdrawing your baseless statements against Kerala,"

"You made statements that had nothing to do with reality and likened Kerala to Somalia. This is unbecoming of a Prime Minister and has created a great deal of agony," the Chief Minister said. "Is it not a shame for the Prime Minister to pronounce that a state like Somalia exists in the country?" asked Mr Chandy, who heads a Congress-led coalition.

The PM has also been referring to recent egregious crimes in the state that's marked itself to tourists as God's Own Country.

The run-up to the elections was marked by murders of political activists from the Left and the right-wing RSS by rival workers. A few weeks ago, a young Dalit student was raped and killed with such violence at her home that her intestines were hanging out. Nobody has been arrested, though the police released a sketch of the suspect last week.

Mr Chandy is fighting allegations of a corrupt administration as he tries to prevent the Left from replacing him. The BJP heads a third front.
