Merchants fined for lapses

The Legal Metrology department has detected 970 cases of lapses on the part of merchants in selling products deviating from norms prescribed under weights and measures rules.

An official press release here said Rs 16,30,750 had been levied as fine in the cases registered between January 1 and 31 during raids.

Cases of improper use of weights and measures instruments, deliberate attempt by merchants to sell products at reduced weights and sale of fake packet products had been detected.

The raid by the department was conducted in jewelleries, bar hotels, textiles, bakeries, ration shops, vegetable markets, super markets, margin free shops and petrol pumps, the release said.
