The new CPI(M) Left Democratic Front government in Kerala will be a people's government and will function beyond caste, religious and political barriers, Chief Minister-designate Pinarayi Vijayan, said on Tuesday.

CPI-M veteran V S Achuthanandan today said he would continue to play the role of a "sentinel" of the people of Kerala, a day after the party unanimously nominated Pinarayi Vijayan over him for the chief minister's post.
As it announced that Pinarayi Vijayan will be Kerala's new chief minister, the CPI-M said 92-year-old VS Achuthanandan, who it did not pick, remains an important man. The party's Fidel Castro, said general secretary Sitaram Yechury.
VS Achuthanandan has left the building. A formal announcement on who will be Kerala's new Chief Minister was made this afternoon, but the 92-year-old Marxist veteran's abrupt departure from the CPM's office in Thiruvananthapuram this morning told the story.
