Illegal mining: Supreme Court to hear Karnataka govt's petition
New Delhi: The Supreme Court is likely to take up the Karnataka government's petition for allowing mining of non-iron ore materials in the state today.

The apex court had already banned mining in a few districts of Karnataka and directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the Reddy brothers for illegal mining in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

On September 5, the CBI, probing the alleged illegal mining by Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC), arrested former Karnataka Minister and mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy and OMC Managing Director B Srinivas Reddy from Bellary in Karnataka and they were remanded in judicial custody at the Chenchalguda central prison in Hyderabad.

The OMC owned by Gali Janardhan Reddy is accused of changing mining lease boundary markings between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and indulging in "illegal" mining in the Bellary Reserve Forest.
