"The position occupied by the official did not involve access to highly classified material. The official is now cooperating with us in our inquiries," Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said in a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha.

Without naming Madhuri Gupta, Second Secretary in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, Kaur said at this stage, for national security reasons, it is not possible to divulge details of information that may have been compromised or to comment on the case as investigations are on.

The minister, however, said that as a result of counter intelligence efforts, "We had reason to believe that an official of the High Commission of India in Islamabad had been passing information to the Pakistan intelligence agencies".

Gupta, 53, was arrested by the Special Branch of Delhi Police on charges of spying for Pakistan.
