Why Congress gave in

New Delhi: So what caused the Congress to greenlight a Telangana state?

Sources tell NDTV that the party's top leadership in Delhi was worried about the volatile situation in Andhra Pradesh; the daily reports of tension in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana seemed ready to spiral out of control.

Sources also say the Congress did not want to come across as the lone party opposing Telangana after the entire Opposition in Andhra seemed united on the issue at an all-party meeting called by Andhra Chief Minister K Rosaiah.

NDTV has learnt that the Home Minister P Chidambaram's announcement on Wednesday night sanctioning the process of creating a separate state came after the text of his speech was approved by K Chandrasekhar Rao, or KCR, who was completing the 11th day of his hunger strike when the Centre decided to blink.
