Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2015: Live Updates From Gandhinagar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 7th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Summit (VGS), a flagship programme of the Gujarat government, in Gandhinagar today.

This year's three-day event is touted to be the biggest ever, with a host of high-profile business as well as political leaders attending it.

US Secretary of State John Kerry today said he was impressed with "palpable entrepreneurial interest" he had seen in the people of Gujarat during his visit to the state and added, "PM Modi made his reputation here in Gujarat. If that can be extrapolated to the rest of India and dealing with all countries, we all benefit."

  • Biggest criticism of the government in the last few months is 'why have you taken decisions so quickly'
  • India can't stop functioning even if one house of Parliament takes time to settle down
  • Distribution of poverty without growth is not a solution to India's problem
  • Government must be led by leader of stature. PM must be decisive, willing to face consequences of his decisions
  • Something which had scared investors away was a highly adversarial tax regime
  • Things may not change overnight but the present government is determined to have a non-adversarial tax regime
  • From 2008 to 2013 we spent five years in coming up with a new company law, completely out of tune with the current requirement of business

I announced a Financial Inclusion programme. In four months we have opened more than 100 million bank accounts.

In order to execute the infrastructure plan a fast track PPP mechanism is being put in place.

Here are the highlights:

I extend solidarity with the people of France.
This event is perhaps the biggest gathering on earth where a budding entrepreneur has opportunity to see President of the World Bank.
And where a young farmer can listen to the views of the UN Secretary General on issues like food security.
We are here as a family, not only in terms of space, but because we recognise that someone's dream is dependent on someone's direction.
The ultimate objective is welfare of all- Loka Samastah Sukhinau Bhavantu.
All of us want the planet earth to become a better place to live.
Have travelled across India and to parts of the world. The biggest concern is about the global economy.
We all have to find ways for economic stability and recovery.
My Government is trying to generate confidence.
There is tremendous interest in India. Countries are coming forward to work with us.
We will have to change the way we have been approaching problems. Recession is often seen just in the context of business and industry.
Have we ever thought of recession as being the result of low per capita income in countries where a majority of global population lives?
Have we ever thought of its solution in terms of enhancing the common man's employability, income and purchasing power?

Our last national elections marked a turning point in Indian democracy. They indicated the high aspirations of our people.
Government is committed to changing and improving the economic and social condition of India including the quality of life.
In a short span of seven months, we have been able to change the atmosphere of despair and uncertainty.
Since the first day my government is actively working to revive the economy.
We want to promote co-operative federalism in the country. At the same time, we want a competitive element among the states.
I call this new form of federalism Co-operative and Competitive Federalism.
