UPA will complete Sethusamudram: Vasan

New Delhi:

The government has said that it is committed to implementing the controversial Sethusamudram Project after the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on the issue and that it was waiting for the R K Pachauri committee to submit its report.

After assuming office, Shipping Minister G K Vasan said the Rs 2,287 crore project will usher in economic development in Tamil Nadu and it should not be looked from a "political angle.

"This is one of the most important projects for Tamil Nadu and for the country. Sethusamudram is a dream project for Tamil Nadu. It will be my endeavour and the government's to complete the project for the economic development of the country particularly Tamil Nadu," Vasan told reporters.

He said the government was waiting for the court verdict and a report from the expert-committee appointed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in July, 2008.

"The government is very clear that the Sethusamudram project should be through. It is a project which is going to be economically viable for the nation and Tamil Nadu," he said and hoped that the verdict will be in the interests of the country.

The Minister said that the government was only waiting for the court verdict and there was no specific delay in executing the project.
