New Delhi: Two persons have been arrested for allegedly posing as officials in the Prime Minister's Office, and cheating two central government employees, police said today.

The accused, identified as, Sandeep Kumar Gupta, 27, and Dilip Kumar, 36, used to make mobile calls to their targets and obtained the debit card and account details from them saying that it was required due to a new policy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.

The matter came to light when two central government employees approached police and told them that they received calls from a person posing himself to be an official from Prime Minister Office (PMO) and sought his debit card and account details citing some new policy.

As soon the complainant parted with their details, about Rs 32,000 was deducted in five transactions and an amount of Rs 13,000 was transferred from the account of the second complainant in two transactions, Mr Yadav said.

Initial investigation was taken up by the local police, and later it was transferred to Crime Branch where a special team was formed for thorough investigation.

A police team was sent to Giridih in Jharkhand to nab the accused, which arrested Sandeep Kumar on September 30, and on his instance, the other accused, Dilip Kumar was arrested later.

During interrogation, they revealed that Dilip Kumar used to make calls from his mobile after identifying their targets. Thereafter, he would transfer the amount in his account. The mobile phone used in the crime has also been recovered, said the officer.

The duo used to cheat people from far-flung places so that they could evade detection by investigating agencies. Further investigation is on to find out their other victims, added the officer.
