As J Jayalalithaa's funeral took place with full state honours in Tamil Nadu today, social media was flooded with messages in tribute to one of India's most popular politicians with a devoted mass following. Ms Jayalalithaa, 68, died last night after three months in hospital. She was buried this evening at Chennai's Marina Beach, next to the memorial of her mentor, MG Ramachandran.

Politicians and films and sports personalities from all the country took to Twitter to pay homage to the chief minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who flew to Chennai today to pay his last respects to Ms Jayalalithaa, expressed deep sadness over her death in a series of tweets. "My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of grief," he tweeted.
 
External Affair Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is in hospital being treated for kidney failure, also condoled Ms Jayalalithaa's death.
 
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu remembered the minster for her work towards development in the areas of power, water and environment.
 
Many fellow Chief Ministers praised Jayalalithaa. Among them were Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Shivraj Chouhan.
 
Film personalities tweeted their tributes to the former film star, who was brought into politics by her co-star and mentor MG Ramachandran or MGR. Amitabh Bachchan recalled her contribution to cinema.
 
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan also expressed his sorrow.
 
It is the end of an era, tweeted southern star Siddharth, echoing many others who expressed similar thoughts.

Ms Jayalalithaa was admitted to hospital on September 22. Her health took a drastic turn for the worse after she suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening.
