New Delhi: The Supreme Court today ruled that admissions to undergraduate medical and dental courses across the country will take place through a single entrance test. The first exam will take place on May 1.

Here are the latest developments:

  1. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET is a common entrance test for medical colleges across the country, proposed by the Centre.

  2. The Supreme Court had last week recalled its order of 2013 in which it struck down the common exam.

  3. The 2013 order had questioned the authority of the Medical Council of India to conduct the test.

  4. Today, the Central Board of Secondary Education had presented a schedule for holding the exam for this academic session.

  5. The first phase of the examination will be held on May 1. Nearly 6.5 lakh students are expected to take it.

  6. The second phase has been scheduled for July 24 in which 2.5 lakh candidates will appear.

  7. The results will be announced for the two phases on August 17 and admissions will be over by September 30.

  8. The May 1 exam will replace the All India Pre-Medical Test scheduled for that day.

  9. In the absence of a common entrance test, students seeking admission to the MBBS or BDS course had to make multiple applications and take scores of tests.

  10. The decision to recall its 2013 order was opposed earlier by states like Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. Several private colleges had opposed NEET saying it impinges on their autonomy in admissions.
