Three policemen have been injured after suspected terrorists opened fire at them at a security check point on the Baramulla-Srinagar highway in Jammu and Kashmir.
The suspected terrorists were travelling in a Tavera passenger vehicle and opened fire when their vehicle was stopped at the check point.
"At about 9.15 pm, a police party at Mirgund in Pattan signalled a cab to stop but two terrorists inside the vehicle started firing," a police official told PTI.
The suspected terrorists then managed to escape from the spot. Police say the suspected terrorists took advantage of darkness and the cops could not retaliate as they wanted to avoid any collateral damage at the check point where several vehicles had been stopped.
The injured cops, including a Station House Office (SHO), have been shifted to a hospital where the condition of the SHO is stated to be critical.
Police sources say they had information that terrorists are planning an attack in Srinagar and security forces were already on high alert and check points were set up at several places in and around the city.
This comes just four days after three terrorists attacked Gurdaspur in Punjab killing seven people, four of them policemen. All three terrorists were gunned down in a counter-terror operation that lasted nearly 12 hours.
Gurdaspur is just 18 km from the border with Pakistan.
Earlier today, government sources said there is "no credible evidence" that the Pakistan government was aware of the plot to attack Gurdaspur. But they also said chilling evidence has been uncovered that proves the attack was planned 17 days in advance and that the three terrorists were armed for a far more serious strike.
