Telangana: PM takes stock, Opposition wants action

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has not spoken in the Parliament so far on the Telangana issue, but outside, he told NDTV that he has asked Andhra Congress MPs about KCR's health and he is taking stock of the situation.

Speaking to NDTV's Sunil Prabhu, the Prime Minister said, "I have asked Andhra Congress MPs about KCR's health. We are taking stock of the situation."

Lok Sabha members on Wednesday expressed concern over the deteriorating health of their fellow MP and TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, who is fasting in support of a separate Telangana state. The issue also came up in the Rajya Sabha and the House was adjourned for a brief period.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha LK Advani demanded that the Central government intervene on the Telangana issue and said: "We are worried about the health of TRS chief KCR." He said K Chandrasekhar Rao's health and Telangana "both are important for us".

Congress leader and Union Minister Jaipal Reddy said "KCR should stop the fast so real issues can be focused upon."

MPs from various parties rose to speak, requesting KCR to end the fast and demanding that the government take quick action on the issue. Gurudas Dasgupta of the CPI and Raghuvansh Prasad of the RJD, among others drew the attention of the government to what they said was a matter of grave concern and said they supported the demand for a separate Telangana state.

In the Rajya Sabha, BJP members stormed the well and raised slogans after their leader M Venkaiah Naidu demanded that Home Minister P Chidambaram, who was present in the House, should make a statement on the issue.

Naidu attacked the government on the handling of the Telangana issue. Amid uproar, he said: "If steps are not taken then situation will go out of hand. What is the stand of the government?

Meanwhile, 25 Congress MLAs from Telangana have written to Sonia Gandhi asking for an urgent solution to the crisis.
