Tamil Nadu: Incandescent bulbs banned in govt offices

Chennai: In a bid to conserve energy, Tamil Nadu government has banned use of power-guzzling conventional or the Incandescent Bulbs in its offices and local bodies.

A Government Order (GO) was issued banning the use of such bulbs in government departments, public sector undertakings, various boards, cooperative institutions, local bodies and institutions running on government aid.

The incandescent bulbs consumed about 40-60 watts of power whereas the more energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL), consumed only 14W, Principal Energy Secretary PWC Davidar said in an official release in Chennai.

Increased consumption of CFLs will bring down the power consumption, he said adding the government had considered in detail the ban against the use of ICBs with a view to conserving energy.

In a given situation, about four crore Incandescent bulbs would consume 2400 mw for an hour whereas the same number of CFLs will consume just 560 mw, he added.
