he Supreme Court stayed an NGT order asking Delhi Metro to seek environmental clearances for projects.

New Delhi: Metro projects will not need to wait for environmental clearances, the Supreme Court said today, staying an order issued in May by the National Green Tribunal or NGT.

In its order on May 31, the National Green Tribunal had said the eastern and western dedicated railway corridors being built did not possess environmental clearances and no environmental impact assessment had been done.

The rail ministry had approached the Supreme Court against the NGT order and the attorney general Mukul Rohatgi had informed the court that railway projects did not require environmental clearances.

The centre had also told the Supreme Court that the NGT order had ended up causing delays of the railway corridors that are meant to promote faster passage of goods across the country.
