Subsidy on Canteen Food to Continue, Decides Parliamentary Panel

The subsidised rates of food in Parliament canteens will continue, as a Parliamentary Committee today decided against raising the rates.

New Delhi: The subsidised rates of food in Parliament canteens will continue, as a Parliamentary Committee today decided against raising the rates, saying it would affect Parliament employees mostly. Most lawmakers prefer to eat at their respective homes, only a minority of them eat in Parliament, said the Committee.

The committee headed by Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) lawmaker, AP Jithender Reddy, has unanimously decided to recommend continuation of the subsidy and against any upward revision in the rates of the food items.

According to sources, any hike in the rate would affect the Parliament employees who make up for a majority of those eating food in their canteens. Mr Reddy said that those who avail the canteen facility the most are class four employees of Parliament and the media-persons who cover the proceedings.

The TRS lawmaker said that if Parliament employees and media representatives are asked to bring food from home, it would create another problem due to thousands of lunch boxes having to go through security checks at the premises.
