Study to evaluate psychological well-being of Armed Forces men

New Delhi: The Armed Forces will evaluate the psychological well-being and quality of life for its personnel and their families because of the strenuous nature of their work.

The aim of the study is to construct a scale to measure the quality of life and well- being in service conditions and in normal day-to-day functioning among its personnel and their families, Lt Gen Mandeep Singh, Director General Hospital Services in the Armed Forces said.

"Armed Forces differ from civil counterparts in roles, working conditions and environment and social living conditions. The work conditions and demands in work situation impact the overall well-being of Armed Forces personnel.

"Families are not left behind from the impact as the work conditions have a direct effect on their well- being. There are scales available for quality of life and well-being in physical disorders and in normal day-to-day functioning amongst the civil population. However, these are lacking in service conditions," he said.

Approved by the Armed Forces Medical Research Committee, this multi-centric study will be conducted by the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune. Questionnaires will be made to suit the requirement of the Army, the Air Force and the Navy.

"The nature of job is different in each service. So scales developed would be indigenous and applicable for the Indian Armed Forces services condition," Lt Gen Singh said.
