Students Fear University Cut-Offs After 'Toughest' Class 12 Mathematics Exam in a Decade

The class 12 CBSE mathematics examination this year is being dubbed as the toughest in a decade. Most students are disheartened and many of them had a break down while attempting the paper.

The students are complaining that the exam was extremely tough, tricky and too lengthy.

Palak Aneja, a class 12 student and a topper, is not very hopeful of being able to pursue economics honors from top colleges after the exam.

Another student and an aspiring economist Ojasvi says that mathematics was her favorite subject but the exam was so difficult that she panicked and broke into tears during the last hour of the exam.

Teachers are also sympathising with their students and are concerned about them meeting the university cut-offs.

Shruti Chandok, a mathematics teacher at Tagore International School says she is worried about students who are comparatively weaker at the subject.

"I don't think Class 12 board exams are the right time to check the intelligence of a student," she said.

Delhi University educationalist Dr Ambika Haider emphasises on the need for students to develop critical thinking but raised concerns over the ability of teachers to provide such as environment.

"You can provide an environment for learners to think out of the box, but are our teachers able to think out of the box," she said.

The students now have their hopes pinned on CBSE marking their papers leniently.
