SP to announce Lucknow candidate on Sunday

New Delhi:

With Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt barred by the Supreme Court from being in fray, Samajwadi Party on Saturday said it will announce its candidate for Lucknow Lok Sabha seat on Sunday.

"We have decided our candidate for Lucknow Lok Sabha seat and will announce the name tomorrow to the media in the state capital," SP general secretary Amar Singh told reporters in New Delhi.

The party had announced earlier this year that Dutt would be its candidate from Lucknow for Lok Sabha elections.

Singh said the candidate has been selected by the party's newly appointed general secretary Sanjay Dutt and he would be making the announcement in Lucknow on Sunday.

"The person in question has been selected by Sanjay Dutt and he will announce the name in Lucknow. However the person selected would only be a proxy candidate as our real candidate for Lucknow is Sanjay Dutt," Singh said.

Dutt suffered a setback earlier this week when the Supreme Court rejected his plea for suspension of his conviction in connection with 1993 Mumbai serial blasts to contest coming Lok Sabha polls.

The apex court decision had forced the party leadership to look for a fresh candidate for Lucknow.
