Sohrabuddin case: Accused cops reveal plot in secret tapes

Ahmedabad: A conversation between two policemen, both in jail, is crucial evidence in the CBI's  case against Amit Shah, the former minister accused of murder. (Read: 25 calls between Amit Shah and NK Amin)

Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife, Kauser, were both killed in Ahmedabad within days of each other in November 2005.  Gujarat's senior-most policemen had abducted the couple, then illegally detained them at a farmhouse, before murdering them. The CBI believes they were following the orders of Amit Shah, who resigned as Gujarat's Minister of State for Home over the weekend. The police claimed that Sohrabuddin was a terrorist en route to assassinating  Narendra Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat. Early investigations revealed this was not the case, and a series of police officers were arrested.  Among them, NK Amin and NV Chauhan. (Read: Who is Sohrabuddin)

In May last year, Amin , who was a close aide of Shah's , discussed the case with Chauhan in jail and secretly recorded the conversation. Chauhan is now a witness for the CBI in the case, and Amin has asked permission to turn approver. (Read: 25 calls between Amit Shah and NK Amin

In their discussion, the two cops refer repeatedly to DG Vanzara, who was the head of Gujarat's Anti-Terror Squad and reportedly the man in charge of the plan to eliminate Sohrabuddin, who had annoyed powerful marble traders with repeated blackmail and extortion.
