Earthquake Kills 35 in Bihar, Power Disconnected in Some Parts

35 people have died in Bihar after the massive earthquake that hit neighbouring Nepal on Saturday morning.

The maximum number of deaths have been reported from West Champaran, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Saturday, adding that he had instructed all the officials to be out on the field. Three people have died in Darbhanga and one in Chhapra.

Power in northern Bihar has been switched off, said senior BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who is tasked with assessing the damage from the earthquake and has been deputed to Bihar.

"PM Modi has put disaster management teams on standby, he is monitoring the situation," Mr Rudy told reporters.

More than 1,800 people have died after the strong earthquake, news agency Reuters said quoting a home ministry official and it is feared that the toll could rise. The earthquake of magnitude 7.9 has left the Nepali capital of Kathmandu criss-crossed with rubble.
