Sena to oppose Jaitapur power project: Uddhav Thackeray
Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray today said his party would continue to oppose the proposed nuclear power project at Jaitapur in Ratnagiri district.

Speaking after meeting a delegation of residents of surrounding villages, Uddhav said that he would soon visit Jaitapur.

"Sena opposes the project because locals do not want it. We do not want development at the expense of local residents. The government should shift the project elsewhere," Thackeray said.

The Sena executive president further said that though the government was promising increased compensation for the project-affected people, the latter did not want any compensation, as they were not ready to let go of their lands in the first place.

"Congress government is imposing the project upon locals," he alleged.

Nuclear Power Corporation of India is building the 9900 MW power project in collaboration with French nuclear designing firm Areva.

However, the plant is facing staunch opposition from the locals who fear environmental degradation in the fragile Konkan area.
