Scaling down VVIP security: A token gesture?

New Delhi: The Congress party's manifesto had promised a comprehensive review of VIP security in the country, but just a week before the first anniversary of Mumbai attacks the Home ministry has either withdrawn or reduced security to just 20 people.

There are 200 VVIPs who are provided with the Z and Z + security.

Those whose security has either been withdrawn or reduced include, former vice president B S Shekawat, former Jammu and Kashmir governor Jagmohan, former NSG chief J K Dutt, and members of former home minister Shivraj Patil's family.

Former home secretaries N Gopalswamy, V K Duggal, Dhirendra Singh, former Delhi Police commissioner K K Paul and former cabinet secretary B K Chaturvedi are also in the list.

After scaling down the security of X and Y category, it was expected that the ministry will make changes in Z and Z+ category.
