Sarabjit Singh's funeral draws thousands; Rahul Gandhi, Punjab Chief Minister present
Sarabjit Singh's wife and two young daughters clung to the coffin that held his body and wept. His sister, Dalbir Singh, who fought hard for years to secure his release from a Pakistani jail, bowed her head. Several Punjab policemen in uniform then carried away Mr Singh's body, draped in the Tricolour, for the final rites.

Pakistani prisoner reportedly attacked in Jammu jail

A prisoner from Pakistan has reportedly been attacked and injured in a jail in Jammu.  He has been moved to hospital.

The attack comes on a day when Sarabjit Singh, the Indian death row convict who died after a fatal assault in a Lahore jail, is being cremated in his village in Punjab.

  • The truth is that in 2005 the PM raised the issue of Sarabjit Singh ji with Pakistan government
  • We should try that we should put pressure on Pakistan and make sure that all the other soldiers in Pakistan's custody are safe

Speaking to NDTV today, Sarabjit's sister once again accused the government of not doing enough to save her brother. "Government acted too late," she said and urged the government to focus on "concentrated efforts to bring back other Indian prisoners in Pakistan."

Markets and other businesses in Bhikiwind, Sarabjit's ancestral village, are closed and people from neighbouring villages are pouring in to pay their respect. All roads lead to the house of the man who, his family says, strayed across the border one night 22 years ago and returned in a coffin.

From Amritsar, a helicopter will fly Mr Singh's body to Bhikhiwind, his ancestral village in Punjab. The state government has declared him a martyr and has decided to accord him a state funeral there tomorrow.

Officials said India is extremely upset about the delay. The plane was scheduled to land in Amritsar after the short flight by 5.15 pm, but it has not yet taken off from Lahore. It has been over two hours since Pakistan handed over Mr Singh's body to Indian officials.

The special plane sent by India to bring back the body of Sarabjit Singh has been delayed due to basic paperwork not being done at the Lahore airport, compounding the anguish of hundreds of people and Mr Singh's family now waiting in Amritsar to receive his body.

Syed Akbaruddin, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson says:

  • An aircraft has taken from Delhi, it will reach Lahore by 4:45 pm
  • It is expected that aircraft will fly from Lahore to Amritsar. Two officials of the Indian High Comm will be on board. Preneet Kaur will receive the aircraft
  • All of us have been toiling to ensure an Indian's life is helped. You think this sort of an issue will be raised with Indian High Commission. This issue is off the table. No such issue was raised. I resent allusion to such possibility. (On taking Sarabjit off life support)
  • Primary focus is to get Sarabjit's mortal remains here and that he be given a proper funeral
  • Everything possible is being done at all levels
  • If we had thought that this case didn't deserve attention on grounds of humanitarian grounds we wouldn't have raised this issue at all
  • When Chamel Singh died we constituted a judicial committee which would inspect the conditions of indian prisoners in Pakistan and report to us. But sadly before the commission could reach Pak, Sarabjit Singh was in hospital
