RSS' succession plan for BJP

New Delhi:

The BJP is looking back, analysing its poll defeat. But the RSS is looking at the future with a blueprint ready.

Those advocating strident Hindutva want Modi at the helm now.

But the Sangh says Modi will be for the next general elections, after he steers the BJP to a win in the Gujarat polls in 2012.

The switch from Vajpayee to Advani was easy. Now the baton has to be passed to the Gen Next. The RSS blueprint suggests no sudden moves and a bloodless transition. That is why Modi will have to wait

The succession plan by the RSS proposes:

A new BJP president and Leader of the Opposition by 2010

Choosing a Deputy Leader for Lok Sabha now to replace Advani later. Sushma Swaraj is the frontrunner.

And an organisational man to replace Rajnath Singh as party president. Arun Jaitley is the top contender.

Says RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav: "The BJP will do whatever to improve...but we know it will decide keeping our sentiments in mind."

The RSS wants Advani to stay for now to maintain peace among the second rung leaders. Since the Jinnah episode, Advani has been resisting RSS influence. But after the poll defeat will he say no to the RSS? Or will he gracefully exit and help those close to him gain control and through them remote control the party he had once built?
