Riot Police Deployed After Clashes Erupt Between BJP-Trinamool Workers Near Kolkata

Rapid Action Force personnel at Uluberia after BJP workers clashed with TMC workers

Kolkata: Gun wielding Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel had to be deployed today at Uluberia, about 30 km from Kolkata, to control a clash between Bharatiya Janta Party and Trinamool Congress workers.

BJP workers had gathered at the sub divisional office (SDO) on Wednesday evening to submit a memorandum on "Save Democracy" day they were observing statewide.

When rumours spread that an effigy of Mamata Banerjee would be set on fire, Trinamool supporters rushed to the site with rods and attacked them, say eyewitness.

The situation spiraled out of control, leaving a dozen BJP workers injured.

BJP has alleged that the police did not intervene and watched as the clashes erupt. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has claimed provocation and claimed they were not directly involved. BJP leader Krishanu Mitra has described the attackers as "Islamists" backed by Trinamool.
