Revolt in new Andhra Pradesh govt, 1 minister quits

Hyderabad: The newly formed Andhra Pradesh government led by Kiran Kumar Reddy plunged into crisis after one minister quit on Wednesday night voicing his unhappiness over portfolio allocation.

The minister Vatti Vasantha Kumar has already sent his resignation to the Chief Minister.

Vatti, who had held the portfolio of Rural Development in the previous K Rosaiah government, quit after he was given the charge of the Tourism Department in the new ministry.

But what is also causing heartburn is that those from non-Reddy communities were given low profile and not so lucrative portfolios. While the Reddys got as many as 14 berths in the new Cabinet, the others were given just about 10.

But it's not just Vatti who is upset over plum portfolios like finance, agriculture, irrigation, health and panchayat raj going to the Reddys, three others also plan to take on the Chief Minister - they are Botsa Satya-Narayana, Dharmana Prasada Rao and Ponnala Lakshmaiah. They are also reportedly planning to quit.

Jagan denies spat with uncle

As ministers in the new Andhra cabinet bicker over portfolios, Congress rebel Jagan Mohan Reddy has trashed media reports that he had an altercation with his uncle Vivekananda Reddy who is now a part of the Kiran Reddy cabinet.

Local papers had reported that Jagan and his uncle had a scuffle during a family meeting in Kadappa. He says there was indeed a discussion and there was no agreement but insists there was no altercation.

Jagan had written to Sonia Gandhi accusing the Congress leadership of trying to create fissures in the family by luring his uncle with a ministerial berth. But the uncle has rejected this as untrue saying he himself had sought a ministerial post. (With PTI inputs)
