New Delhi:

Security has been strengthened for Reserve Bank of India or RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, as the Mumbai police investigate a threat email that he received earlier this month, sources have said.

The email reportedly says that "money has been paid" to eliminate the 52-year-old high-profile Governor of India's central bank.

RBI officials alerted the police about the email.

The city police's cyber-crime investigation cell is investigating the case, and is trying to trace the origin of the mail. A case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

The sources said the police don't rule out mischief, but are treating it seriously. "The letter was received a few days back. We have taken note of it and the RBI Governor's security has been beefed up," Maharashtra's Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K P Bakshi told PTI.
