New Delhi:
The railways paid Rs 497,72 lakh in compensation in 2011-12 to families of the dead and those injured in train accidents, parliament was informed on Friday.
Minister of State for Railways K.J. Surya Prakash Reddy told the Rajya Sabha in a written statement that this figure stood at Rs 265.81 lakh in 2009-10 and Rs 585.79 in 2010-11.
The statement, however, clarified that compensation paid in a given year was not related to the accidents or casualties suffered in that year.
The minister said the railways paid compensation only after a green signal from the Railway Claims Tribunal.
For death and permanent disability, Rs 4 lakh was paid while those injured got between Rs 32,000 and Rs 369,000 depending on the gravity of the injury.
